Almost everyone has heard the saying, “It’s cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey”
…but do you know the origin of that old saying?
Well, according to folklore, back in the days of the tall ships, many of those ships used cannons and round iron balls for protection and warfare.
Stopping round balls from rolling around on ship decks was a problem, so onboard ships, the balls sat in an iron contraption that had indentations to receive them and was called a monkey.
Sixteen balls sat on the bottom with nine stacked atop of those, with another four resting upon the nine and one resting atop of the four for a total of thirty balls in a pyramid shape.
The original monkey was made of iron, and it was quickly discovered that the balls on the bottom soon rusted to the monkey so they built a different monkey using brass.
A brass monkey created another problem…brass and iron expands and contracts at different temperatures and when the temperatures would get very cold, the monkey would contract faster than the iron cannon balls, causing all the balls to tumble down.
Many historians say that the above explanation is totally false, but it makes for a rather good story. 😉
Whether or not there is any truth to that explanation, remains the topic of debate and it is tempting to draw lessons from even untrue stories.
One lesson seems to be that there will always be someone to engineer a solution for any number of problems.
…nevertheless for the folks who always thought the old saying had a dirty side to it…sorry! 😉
Personally, I would like to believe that the sailors of days gone by were smarter than the old saying depicts. For instance, why not build a slightly sloped wooden channel similar to the ball-return at a bowling alley?
Fast forward to present day and people are still searching for solutions to millions of problems that other folks face and the folks with problems are paying big bucks to find solutions for their problems.
Lots of times, people claiming to have the solutions are nothing but slick snake-oil salesmen who sell garbage solutions…and once they have your money, you never see them again.
